Who are the Children in Need?
National statistics tell us that at any given moment 20% of all children suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder; 5% to 9% of all children have a severe mental health disorder that severely impacts their functioning at home and in the home communities.
These statistics suggest that 4,800 Orange County children suffer from a mental health disorder. Between 1,200 and 2,150 of them are having real trouble functioning at home, in school, and in their communities. Additionally, these statistics suggest that 2,200 Chatham County children suffer from a mental health disorder. Between 550 and 1,000 of them are having real trouble functioning at home, in school, and in their communities.
Currently, neither Orange nor Chatham County is treating anywhere near this number of children, nor does either county have the capacity to treat them. We must find these children, and we must provide them with the services and supports they need to ensure their successful journey to adulthood in our communities.
